Curriculum

This year in Year 6 we will be studying the themes of:  

New Zealand and The Holiday Show
 - in Autumn Term 1.
Australia and Moving People – in Autumn Term 2.
Africa and S.P.O.O.C.S - in the Spring Term
South America and Go with the flow (Rivers) - in the Summer Term

Numeracy - place value, space and shape, measures, developing their understanding of the four written methods and applying them to word problems.

Literacy - developing their understanding of sentence structures and ways to improve their writing. Children will be writing their own autobiographies, producing an adventure quest story as well as becoming a private investigator at a spooky mansion, which will look at all different types of writing.

Science - Children will be planning and carrying out their own investigations and studying topics: Micro-organisms, Earth and Beyond, Forces, Electricity, Ourselves and other animals and Interdependence and adaptations.

Homework - Homework will be set as and when required by their teachers. Children should make sure though that they read every night and know their times tables. Children have homework diaries, which are to prepare them for their transition to secondary school and parents can sign these.

Generally children have literacy and numeracy homework once a week.Guidance for the preparation of SATS:
  • Read regularly
  • A good breakfast
  • Ensuring that children a goodnight rest
  • Revising a little bit each night rather than all at the last minute
Well before SATs Revise Wise books for Numeracy, Literacy and Science will be available to buy in school at a reduced rate. These books are used to back up any revision work that is done in school and homework is set from them.
